Will Bode

I was first introduced to ovens while living in a community in Mexico in 2003, again in a community in Ghana in 2005, and again in Maine, USA in 2006. I started by actively helping others bake in these ovens and then took on the role of baker myself. In 2007 I had the opportunity to build my first oven, which is still used to this day by its owners. From 2007 to 2012 I built a handful of ovens in various places I lived.

In 2012 I started to teach the Earthen Ovens course with Mark Krawczyk at Yestermorrow Design/Build School in Waitsfield, Vermont. We Co-taught this course for seven years, building around a dozen ovens together.  During two of those same years I built ovens during winter travels to Guatemala and Thailand.

These ancient skills are at the root of so many cultures across the world. This is one of the reasons it is my passion, I see it as a corner-stone of culture. I am very happy to see it is making a resurgence as homesteading and self-sustainability gain popularity. Join me along this journey of Ovens and Sourdough Culture!
